If Gilmore Girls Characters Went to Our University

This summer I rewatched the show featuring everyone’s favourite mother-daughter duo: Gilmore Girls. Rory Gilmore is the most studious individual I’ve ever seen in a television show and as a university student, I would love to have her study skills. While I was rewatching Gilmore Girls I asked myself one of my favourite questions — what would the Gilmore Girls characters be like if they went to our university?

Rory Gilmore as the studious aspiring journalist

Rory Gilmore has dreamed of being a journalist since she was a young girl, so it only makes sense that she would be in the Journalism program, learning how to write and break stories. Since she would want to study as many subjects as she could, Rory would also pursue a minor in English and Politics. Outside of class, Rory would write for On the Record News (external link, opens in new window) , the school news outlet for Journalism students. She can be found studying at the Student Learning Centre (opens in new window)  late into the night with a cup of Balzac’s coffee (external link, opens in new window)  in near proximity.

Lorelai Gilmore as the determined (and caffeinated) business student

Lorelai Gilmore would work towards her goal of opening her own inn with her best friend Sookie St. James by enrolling in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at the Ted Rogers School of Management. Every day before class Lorelai stops by Oakham Café (external link, opens in new window)  for coffee and the student loan special breakfast. She also likes to work on her sewing and design skills while pursuing a minor in Fashion Studies

Lane Kim as the future rock musician

There is no doubt that Lane Kim would be in the Professional Music program to help launch her music career. When she’s not studying, she’s rocking out with the Musicians@Ryerson (external link, opens in new window)  student group. Toronto has a great music scene, which means Lane is out discovering new music every weekend and hopes to play some iconic venues with her new band.

Luke Danes as the food-focused student

Luke Danes would be in the Nutrition and Food program at our university, even though being in the crowded streets of downtown Toronto is not his favourite place to be. He would also minor in Tourism to help achieve his goal of opening his own restaurant. Before he opens Luke’s Diner, Luke works in the kitchen between classes at Oakham Café where he frequently sees Lorelai. He also loves to get fresh produce for his cooking from our rooftop Urban Farms.

Jess Mariano as the working writer and reader

Jess’ passion for the written word would definitely be in the English program at our university. Outside of classes, he contributes his time and writing with Writer’s Collective (external link, opens in new window) , our university’s creative writing club, so he can work towards his goal of publishing his own book one day. In his spare time, Jess works at the university through the Career Boost program to make some cash.

Paris Gellar as the student that is everywhere all the time

Is there anything Paris Gellar doesn’t do? She would major in Biomedical Sciences, and since Paris likes a challenge, she’ll also minor in News Studies and Politics. In the little spare time Paris has, she would write for The Eyeopener (external link, opens in new window) , a student-run newspaper at our university and break some wild stories. Did I mention that she’s also an executive member of our Student Union (external link, opens in new window) ?

I personally would love to have the Gilmore Girls gang here at our university, and not just because I would love to ask Rory about her study habits.

Until next time,

Jenna
